Become a Data Protection Officer (DPO)
What is the role of a DPO?
A Data Protection Officer (DPO) is to monitor and manage compliance with data protection legislation such as the UK and EU General Data Protection Legislation (GDPR).
The DPO is responsible for the level of compliance in their organisation and as such, they must operate with the support and full co-operation of the senior management.
Who can be a DPO?
There are no specific prerequisites to becoming a DPO. However, we would recommend a level of experience and seniority that would enable them to have the sufficient gravitas to be successful in the role.
One key legislative requirement is that they must not have a conflict of interest in the organisation that they work for (or with, if external). This means that they should not be involved in making decisions about the processing of personal data other than in their role as a DPO.
As an example this means that most Managers, Business Owners and Directors can not be the appointed as the DPO.
